It’s just a little (perfume) crush…

After spending few years in wondrous perfume world I must say that perfumista’s life is not an easy life. So many perfume to try, so little time, so many scents to sniff and too little skin to spray. And all those obstacles awaiting perfume lovers behind the corner… Troubles with finding a place to try the newest fragrances, problems with getting sample of a perfume that is not being sold in our countries, deciding if one should blind buy the mysterious bottle with even more mysterious juice or not. And one more obstacle which often stops me from going further – crush, perfume crush, there it goes… And I want to talk about it for a while.

I experience perfume crushes once in a while. They appear out of nowhere, attack me suddenly and they won’t let go this quickly as one would want them to. It’s hard to explain why it happens, maybe it’s all because the initial euphoria that accompanies smelling some new (but not only new) fragrances. I had few perfume crushes this year. Yes, I survived them, didn’t buy any of those tempting bottles. I managed to overcome this barrier that stops me from discovering new areas of perfumery.

Some time ago, at the beginning of 2012 I was looking for a perfume for my 22nd birthday. Then I found a nice bottle of Victor & Rolf Antidote sitting on the perfume counter. I grabbed it along with a sampling paper and sprayed generously. Sampling on paper was promising so another spray went on my hand. I waited short while for the juice to settle on the skin and I took a deep whiff. My heart skipped a bit. I liked it’s aroma, but something wasn’t alright so I took a sample home to have an “intimate date” with this crush. Thank God I realized that in this perfume every note appears at the same time. I was unable to tell what I smell, too much was happening at the same time, too much splendor for me. So I passed and this crush quickly let go.

Few months later I was in a search for good citrus scent. I needed one to join my collection as I didn’t have a single one of that kind to wear during summer. First I discovered Chanel Allure Edition Blanche. This fragrance was following me for months. Meanwhile I also had a small crush (or an affair?) with Dior Eau Sauvage and Eau Sauvage Extreme. Both were lovely but their longevity on my skin made me say no. But Chanel still kept whispering buy me, buy me, you need me. Nothing really made me pass on Allure Edition Blanche. I still think it’s great perfume and I really love how it smells. It’s just I don’t love it that much to have a full bottle. A 25 ml decant would be enough for me.

All those perfume crushes made me stronger. They taught me how to resist momentary temptation. They also taught me to have more respect for citrusy notes. Later I found two great citrus fragrances. I didn’t buy any of them but I will one day. Those are Eau d’Hadrien from Annick Goutal and I Profumi di Firenze Limone di Sicilia. Both smell divine and citruses in them are just the way I like them, juicy, acidic and very refreshing. It wasn’t easy to survive through these perfume crushes. One lasted longer, one disappeared quicker but if I didn’t have a strong will I would end up with two or three bottles of perfume that I don’t love so much as I thought. That would be sad…

Glad I’m a kind of person that really cares about love for scents. I only buy those perfume that after few tryings make me 100% sure that I’ll appreciate them and will use them with pure joy. This attitude is also healthy to my low student budget. Keeping my head cold allows me to stock money for a nicer bottle of perfume instead of buying more bottles. I’m a minimalist and to me less is more. I believe that a greater love towards less bottle has much better value than smaller love for a whole bunch of scents. Don’t you agree? What do you, my friends, think about perfume crushes? If you ever experienced a perfume crush please share what fragrance it was and how this affair ended.

PS. I was listening to Crush by Jennifer Paige while writing this article!

Very nice article ! Well I have lots of perfume crushes. They change all the time as well from the old classic Guerlain like Mitsouko to Parfums Delrae. This depends on my mood, weather and season. My last crush is BOIS 1920 La Vaniglia.

    • lucasai says:

Thank you Esperanza! You’re in this perfume world much longer than I am so I’m sure many more crushes await me. All these sound nice but I never tried BOIS 1920 brand.

  2. shellyw says:

I tell myself something may be lovely, but next week, next month something just as lovely will be out.

    • lucasai says:

There’s something true in this statement. I’m glad that I’m able to find disadvantages of a perfume soon after I’m beeing foolishly in “love” with a scent.

  3. Suzy Q says:

Oh yes, you have described the perfume crush exactly. It is truly like falling in love–you lose your head. You want to possess and be possessed.
Current crushes: Seville a l’Aube and the new Atelier Cologne, Vetiver Fatal.
Acknowledging that rush of adoration as merely a crush can save you a lot of money, and make you stronger, as you say. My rule is to use up a decant before making a full bottle commitment. It’s surprising how often the thrill fades before I finish that decant. And I’m always so glad I didn’t commit.

    • lucasai says:

Hello Suzy Q. Glad you liked it. Yes, it’s like possess and be possessed. I’m relieved that I come back to my senses just in time. Thanks for sharing your crushes, I don’t know either Seville a l’Aube either Vetiver Fatal, but I read many positives about them. I always try to get a sample first before deciding. Usually that sample is enough for me to decide if something is full bottle wortky, or a decant worthy.

  4. Warum says:

Oh, perfume crushes. They are dangerous. I have not been as stoic as you, and the crush often goes away with a FB. Chase of a thrill I guess.

    • lucasai says:

Oh yes, they are dangerous. Well I’m stoic because I’m perfectly aware of my budget. Studying chemistry doesn’t allow me to work part time in the afternoons so the only money I get now is a scholarship for good grades on exams. If I had more money I guess I would spend a little more on perfume. But as for now I find one bottle of perfume every 3 months (4 per year) to be a perfect amount for me.

What is/was your latest perfume crush?

      • Warum says:

Nahema *stops to see hearts and flowers in my eyes* I just got some, look at the 50 ml bottle of pdt and think that it is not enough 🙂
I am the worst budget follower under the Sun, I always think “it’s a week left till the end of the month, I don’t have to eat” LOL

  5. poodle says:

I have tons of crushes. Some of my crushes are on things I haven’t even smelled. That must be like a celebrity crush when you love someone you’ve never met. I’m getting better at avoiding the impulse buy but I still have a hard time passing up a bargain. I’m trying to keep my full bottle purchases to true loves like you do but it’s hard. Unless they are pricey, then I can resist the urge a little easier. I’m not sure what my current crush is. I think I’m a little in love with those two Kerosene scents still, Creature and Whips and Roses.

    • lucasai says:

I see. I’ve been also fantasizing about perfume I didn’t even try yet and maybe I have no chances to try quickly. Good that you learn to avoid impulsive purchases, and yes, bargains are hard to resist, but they don’t happen often in Poland. I have the same situation, it’s easier to resist pricey bottle. I’ve read about Kerosenes, didn’t try any.

  6. Undina says:

I can’t remember a single perfume that I would like enough to buy a full bottle (quickly or after long courtship, doesn’t matter) and lost interest in it after that or regreted a purchase. Everything else is a normal process: I test, I think about how I feel, I decide either I want a bottle/a decant of the said perfume – and then I buy it (or keep planning to buy 😉 ).

  7. hajusuuri says:

Nice article! My definition of a “crush” is something desirable AND unattainable so all I can do is fantasize about it. With that said, in keeping with how crush is used here, I will share that I usually cave in to my perfume crushes. My most recent crushes were: Aedes de Venustas Signature (for the bottle first and the juice second), Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue (the juice to the infinity power and the bottle is nice to look at too), Seville a l’Aube (the juice is GORGEOUS). Perhaps the only crush I may end up not purchasing is Channel Coco Noir but then again, that bottle IS calling me 🙂

    • lucasai says:

Thank you dear! I like your definition of a crush. It’s not bad at all to cave into those crushes if you really love them. I would blame myself for buying something that I stopped loving. Nice crushes you have there. I only know Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue (thanks!) don’t know the others.
And I just tried Coco Noir yesterday.

      • hajusuuri says:

Coco Noir! I have an unlabeled sample from Nordies that I *think* is Coco Noir but so as to not taint my experience, I will ask for another sample. hope to read your review of it at some point in the near future 🙂

  8. kelly4 says:

Hi Lucasai, Great article. Smelled Co Co Noir the other day at Nordstrom. I’m looking forward to your review about it.

    • lucasai says:

Hi kelly4! I tried it yesterday at Douglas, their politics doesn’t offer perfume sample on polite request in perfumery, so I sprayed generously on myself and on testing paper.

  9. Hi Lucas, I suffer from serial perfume crushes, and don’t think I will ever stop. At the moment I have big crushes on Mohur by Neela Vermeire and Amber Oud by Kilian, and dread the day that the samples will be empty as I will have to decide what to do next. During a crush I do cheat and wear other perfumes from my collection as the temperature, occasion, and mood demand. Wearing Mohur at the moment, revelling in its spicy, gold flecked rose.

    • lucasai says:

Oh, I don’t know any of the two you mentioned, only heard a little bit about them.
The good thing here is that you first use up samples to decide and you don’t rush to buy a full bottle immediately after one try.

  10. Natalie says:

It’s smart to hold out for perfume loves, rather than crushes. There are a lot more crushes to be had, too. 🙂

  11. smellythoughts says:

I find crushes wierd – some of my all time favourite fragrances, I still don’t own a bottle of. But I will happily sniff something once and buy it there and then just because “I like it”. I need to sort my head out :’)
I’m not a fan of decants, so it’s either spend all in, or not at all!
    A fun read! 🙂

    • lucasai says:

Glad you had fun reading it. So you like risking when it’s all or nothing, huh?

      • smellythoughts says:

Ermmmmm, yeh I guess so. I rarely blind buy any more (but I enjoy it when I do) – what I mean is, if I like something, I wouldn’t buy a decant, I’d just buy the bottle, I’ll grow to love it 🙂

        • lucasai says:

Good attitude! At least you don’t regret any. I regret buying Pour un Homme de Caron last year.

          • smellythoughts says:

Oh I’ve made mistakes but have sold them on – everything I own now I really love. But yes, I’ve made some bad blind buys. I hate having something in my collection that I don’t realllly enjoy. I kind of feel this way about Avignon but quite feel the need to get rid of it.

    • hajusuuri says:

I’m not a fan of decants, either. The only “decant” I bought from on online store that primarily sells decants and samples was 5mL of Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist. It was really way too expensive for the volume but I wanted to try it and if I love it enough, find some way to get a FB. Prior to this month, the only way for me to get a FB is to go to Paris (and perhaps some other European countries) or ask someone traveling to Paris to buy it for me. Lucky me, Barneys in New York now carries the SL Exclusives and I see at least one cloche perfume bottle in my collection in the near future!

      • smellythoughts says:

They are very expensive at Barneys now though ey?! Ah well, people will pay it 🙂 I completely understand the exception for Lutens’ exclusives, I can’t wait to get my hands on some! 🙂

        • lucasai says:

Any particular ones? I wish I could try encens et lavande

          • smellythoughts says:

Well I’m heading over to a few countries at the end of the year. Hoping to pick up La Myrrhe which I have fallen for, maybe ISM just becuase it’s a classic, I’m eager to try Sarrasins amongst others 🙂 I’d be interested to see how different Encens Et Lavande is to Gris Clair…

            • lucasai says:

Hope you’ll compare both. And I sincerely hate ISM!

            • smellythoughts says:

Really? That’s surprising considering you’re an iris lover. I have to be a sheep and agree with the crowd – I find it outstanding.
I shall do if I get the chance to give it a good sniff! I do love my Gris Clair 🙂

            • lucasai says:

I love my sample of Gris Clair. But yes, ISM doesn’t speak to me.
I’ll tell more. I’m an iris lover, but carroty irised I don’t like, really, so it’s not only ISM…

            • smellythoughts says:

The carroty is my favourite – dish more! Maybe I’ll find some new loves 😀

            • lucasai says:

So you should try Iris de Nuit from Heeley or Bois d’Iris from The Different Company, those are carroty irises.

      • lucasai says:

I go for decants or smalls samples quite often. I had to do so to get a permission to organize splits. Here in Poland we have a wonderful split board without a chance of overpaying. Everyone has to prove how much they paid so a price per 1ml is an exact one, without any gain for the splitting person

      • hajusuuri says:

Oh oh, smellythoughts may be my scent twin. The carroty note in ISM is precisely why I’m seriously thinking of getting a FB, even at those prices 🙂
